Media Movie Magic is a fantastic way for students to learn the craft of film making. The idea of the programme is for students to gain experience in as many areas of the film making process as possible, but it all depends on the group of students. No class is the same and this programme does require some customization depending on the situation. Open and regular communication between the staff of Media Movie Magic and the teacher in charge of the group is essential to its success.

The programme is designed for one elementary school class at a time and, currently, is being offered to grades 4 through 6. If you have a particularly amazing group, regardless of the grade, do contact us and we will see what we can do to accommodate you.

Here is a typical timeline for a Media Movie Magic Production:
This is after initial contact and discussion with the teacher.

Part 1: Introduction & Assessment of Drama Skills
This allows the programme instructor and the students to get to know one another and for the instructor to get a feel for the group's level of sophistication. Improv games will be utilized.

Part 2: Brainstorming & Discussion
This is an open forum between the class and the instructor (teacher as well) in regards to what type of film the students wish to make. Short films are the focus, anything between 5 and 25 minutes roughly. Character Matters are a fantastic focal point unless other issues are raised during discussion. In order for students to learn the craft of film making special effects will be kept to a minimum and green or blue screen work is not offered at this time. Students are encouraged to consider what message their film will have.

Part 3: Script/Story Writing
Depending on the group of students, the script can be written a couple of ways: the teacher and students can write it as a group, the students can write independently or in small groups or the instructor can write the script based on student stories or the brainstorming session. Proper script format can be discussed or the teacher can be left with information to utilize. At the end of this part a polished script will have been created.

Part 4: Script Read Through & Explanation of the Audition Process
After the script has been created a round-table read through will be done with the class. This will give everyone the opportunity to hear what the story sounds like (very different than just reading it to yourself) and get a feel for an audience's possible reaction to the humourous elements. This also gives the class the chance to see where editing may be required and to get a feel for the characters they will be auditioning for.
Following the read through the audition process is explained and an audition date is set.

Part 5: The Audition
Students audition for the role(s) they would like.
Following this the teacher and instructor decide who gets what role in the film. Some students may not wish to audition and they can offer what production role they may like to have on this day.

Part 6: Production Meeting & First Rehearsal
At this time the students are given their roles in both the acting and production part of the film. Following this there is a first rehearsal and a production meeting detailing each person's job and what that job entails.

From here the teacher can rehearse the script whenever class time permits it. During the process, as the teacher sees fit, the instructor can attend the rehearsals and offer guidance.

Part 7: Final Preparation
This is the last step before the film is actually recorded. A final rehearsal is conducted and all production elements come together. A shooting schedule for the film is established as well.

Part 8: Filming
Everything comes together and the film is shot. How long this part takes depends on a variety of factors.

Part 9: Post Production
What this part consists of depends on the end result of filming. Various factors come into play such as lighting and sound issues which may result in additional audio recording or ADR. Some scenes may have to be reshot as well depending on the situation.

Part 10: Editing
The Media Movie Magic team edits the film.

Part 11: The Presentation
The final product is presented to the class or school.

So there you have it. That is how Media Movie Magic works. How long this process takes depends on the class and the teacher. It can take a few weeks, a few months or span the entire school year. Either way the end result is a group of students learning the joys of film making.
